Scripture Union Daily Guide 8th May 2026 – Outline

Babylon oppressed the children of Israel and Judah who were in captivity. And against God’s intention, Babylon was unwilling to let them go (Jeremiah 50:33). This is the painful reality of playing into the hands of the Devil. If we choose to disobey God, we invariably become vulnerable victims of Satan’s oppression. Read Jeremiah 50:34 again. What does it teach us about the character of God?

Though we are weak, our Redeemer is strong. He hates oppression and injustice. As the Redeemer, He will act decisively against the oppressor (Babylon), and everything they trust in will be rendered useless (Jeremiah 50:35-38; cf. Exodus 14:13-14). Though so powerful, Babylon will fall and go into oblivion (Jeremiah 50:39-40) and God’s people shall be delivered.

The judgement against Babylon is determined and sealed, nothing can change it (Jeremiah 50:41-46). We can thank God that Christ has given us victory over, sin, Satan and the world. Though we may be oppressed and persecuted, we can trust God to rescue us. However, we also must shun acts of oppression in our dealings with fellow men.
